Die einfachsten Zentren dieses Typs sind Maschinen, die einer herkömmlichen Fräsmaschine mit numerisch gesteuerten Achsen und automatischem Werkzeugwechsel sehr ähnlich sind. Komplexere Maschinen, die eine Bearbeitung von fünf Seiten ermöglichen, haben zusätzliche Achsen in Form eines schwenkbaren und drehbaren Tisches oder Kopfes.
