FERMAT’S SOLUTION FOR THE WIND MILL INDUSTRY

There are several issues that make machining of a windmill hub a big challenge for machine shops. As a result, the machining of the hub can get quite complicated and become a time consuming process. To simplify this task, Fermat has developed a feature dedicated especially for the manufacturers of windmill turbines – a tilting headstock, which is new to the horizontal boring mill market.
Apart from simplified machining, the tilting headstock also means an investment reduction – this special feature encompasses several accessories or options that are no longer necessary. For example, with the tilting headstock option the devices such as angular head and a special tilting table are no longer needed, as it is possible to machine at different angles.

Machine specification
The efficiency and reliability of the tilting headstock contribute to the application of this solution not only on machining of hubs, but also on machining of bearing housings and bottom frames.
The headstock slide is highly rigid. The tilting mechanism is seated at a cross-bearing with a loading capacity up to 400 tons. There is hydraulic-mechanical stiffening of the tilting axis for position locking and a ball screw and a servo-motor to drive the tilting mechanism. For the direct measurement of the angle, Fermat uses a Heidenhain rotary encoder ROD280. As there is a possibility of vibration transferred between the slides, Fermat has decided to use GS Super for its damping between sliding surfaces.

Technical data
The spindle axis can be tilted from 0° up to -8°. The travels range from 0 – 1000 mm on the Z-axis (ram out-travel) and from 0 – 1000 mm on the W-axis (spindle out-travel). The spindle rpm is 10 – 3000/min, main motor input varies from 37 to 60 kW. Spindle loading capacity is up to 40 kN, the positioning accuracy is 0.001°.

Machine configuration
There are different possibilities of machine configuration. First of them is a standard combination of a floor type horizontal boring mill WRF with one rotary table and tilting ram device. The positioning of the tilting ram and positioning of the rotary table at the same time enables machining under different angles.

The other possible configuration is a combination of a floor type horizontal boring mill WRF with two rotary tables and tilting ram device. This optimizes the investment costs and the productivity of machining, as it provides the ability to change a work piece on one table, while machining on the other.

These are just few of the tilting headstock characteristics that enable the machining of windmill hubs less difficult, while cutting down both time consumption and machining expenses.
